I am very happy that FFG acquired the Star Wars license. I want to give the a congratulatory "Atta-boy!" pat on the back and buy their stuff when it comes out.
BUT (there is always a 'but' isn't there?)
Yoda: "A disturbance in good game design I sense . Yes young padawan, being ridden a fad is. A cooperative fad."
Admiral Ackbar: "It's a trap?"
Yoda: "Admiral, no. Falling towards the dark side of cash grabs a company is. The fail is strong with this one. Too much doing of the same thing over and over."
Princess Leia: "Help us non-cooperative games, you're our only hope."
Yoda: "Yes, Princess. Designed good games must be. The path of overdoing cooperatives the dark side lies. The path of recycled recent game design the dark side lies. The path FFG travels the dark side lies."
Are you f*****ng kidding me? Again?! With all the wasted cards people have to buy, again?
I refuse to buy this just on principle. It's the scummiest business plan on the planet. Sorry, but it is, and now they've done it twice, after all the agreement on the boards about what a horrible idea it was for Lord of the Rings.
I am now officially removing my FFG fan badge.
FFG should probably just announce that they've completely abandoned making the games that put them on the map - big, glorious Ameritrash games with interesting mechanics. It's all RPG books and miniature games and boring, interminable card games with recycled mechanics. They appear to have decided, because their last few big box games were sales disappointments, that the genre isn't worth continuing anymore. What they should have taken from Runewars, and Battles of Westeros, and Horus Heresy is that packing undeveloped, mis-targeted, tepid games into large boxes is a recipe for failure. Do you know cares about the *battles* in the Game of Thrones? No one. They aren't the draw. Do you know who cares about that awful, milquetoast Runebound world? No one.
More licenses will not save you, FFG. Make exciting, groundbreaking games again, and the buyers will line up. And please, please, stop trying to shove 8 square inches worth of game into a 14" box. It doesn't make it look impressive, and it has backfired.
Not only that, but current evidence suggests it is the same game as LotR with a new theme slapped on to it.
Who does FFG think they are, Reiner Knizia?
