The game world is in continual transformation and we have new things to play with each time we go through the shop, so it is quite hard to choose the right ones for us. We made this list to help you and maybe to show you some of the most popular games that appeared in the recent years. Games like Scrabble, Backgammon, Chess or Go are still quite popular but there are so many other games available and you should try some of them out at least once.
10. Carcassonne
The oldest game on this list was designed Klaus-Jurgen Wrede in 2000 and one year later it won the Spiel des Jahres award. The game is played in 2 to 5 players (or 6 with expansion) and is a medieval territory building one where each player will draw and place a tile that could have a road, cloister, city or grassland on it. The tiles are placed next to ones that are similar and when an area is completed the player will receive extra points. At the end of the game, when no tiles remain, the player with the most points wins. The success of the game led to many expansions being created and it is quite rich in its strategic thinking, making it ideal for players who enjoy games like go or chess.
9. 7 Wonders
The card drafting game with the most awards (over 30, including the Kennerspiel des Jahres in 2011) was created by Antoine Bauza and it uses three decks with ancient civilizations putting you in charge of one of the seven great cities. The game lasts through three ages and each one adds new cards to further your strategy. Some cards give you immediate bonuses while others will affect the game later and you play them right after you draft them, so you might be able to disrupt your opponents by guessing the card they will choose. The game can be played with 2 to 7 players and a session will take around half an hour.
8. Coup
Rikki Tahta designed this bluffing card game through the aid of Kickstarter and instead of putting you on the spot as the spy or hidden enemy, you can actually win just by telling the truth since there isn’t the card which says “you are a…” in the game. This of course will only make you want to deceive more and you start out with two cards from a deck of 15 with a character on them that has a unique action. When you take an action you just announce the one from the card, or make up one, since you don’t have to reveal the card. The game is great if you play it in five but the players can range from 2-6 and it will only take you about 15 minutes to finish a game.
7. Sushi Go!
A quick and fun card game where you to draft your deck in three rounds and then use it to become the best sushi restaurant in town. It can be played in 2-5 players and it only takes around 20 minutes with each card giving you a number of points, depending on the overall deck, and at the end, the player with most points wins the game. Designed by Phil Walker-Harding, this game is very easy to learn and can be played from the age of eight and up.
6. Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game
This meta-cooperative psychological survival game is the first one of a series testing the abilities of a group to work together and stay alive while going through several crises and challenges. It can be played with up to five players and it throws you into a colony of survivors with diseases and monsters surrounding you. Each player is the leader of a faction and has several unique skills which he must use to lead the team to a common victory. There is also an individual victory which is determined by the secret objective each player has and it might involve something that disrupts the overall goal of the team.
5. Pandemic
Matt Leacock designed this game in 2008 and it was highly successful ever since. Its idea is to find four diseases spread throughout the globe and try to eradicate them before the outbreaks kill everyone. It can be played with up to four players and there is an expansion that allows a fifth one in the team. The cooperative nature made it very appreciated and it is great as a family game due to the teamwork it involves.
4. Spyfall
Another card game, this one gives cards with different locations and one of them is a “spy” card. Each other player will have a location on their card and question start being put to find out who is the spy. He has to come up with clever answers each time and lead suspicions toward another player. Each player may accuse another one and if there is an agreement then the accused player has to reveal his identity. At the same time the spy can end a round if he guesses the secret location and then victory is his. The game was designed by Alexandr Ushan and is a great party game which can be played with up to eight players.
3. Splendor
Cards and poker chips don’t necessarily need a well-developed theme to work well and this is shown easily through the high popularity of this game. The game was designed by Marc Andre and it involves merchants during the Renaissance age trying to expand their business through gem mines, shops and transportation. The game can be played in two to four players and it is so highly appreciated due to its efficiency. It is simple enough for everyone to get on the fly and with an engine that revolves around deck building it will provide you with many hours of fun.
2. Viceroy
The game was released with the aid of Kickstarter and it can be played alone or with up to four players. Its designer is Yuri Zhuravlev and the game is set in the universe of Laar. You manage your resources and bid for new ones while recruiting allies to help you. The cards will define your state’s military and magic might while you continue to expand and compete with the other players. Each player will build his own pyramid and they are one of the roads toward the victory since in the end the player with most power points will rule the whole of Laar and win the game.
1. Love Letter
“All of the eligible young men (and many of the not-so-young) seek to woo the princess of Tempest. Unfortunately, she has locked herself in the palace, and you must rely on others to bring your romantic letters to her. Will yours reach her first?“ The game was designed by Seiji Kanai for two to four players and it brings deduction and luck into a very simple and yet highly entertaining system. Each player tries to deliver his or her love letter to the princess and at the same time keep the other players away. You have a deck of 16 characters, four reference cards and small red cubes. It is simple enough for new players so you can start playing right away.
